  • About our Theater
We look forward to greeting you with the most brilliant MISO (“smile”) in Korea.
‘Chongdong Theater is renewing our challenge to become Korea’s representative performance venue for the traditional arts, in pursuance of our goal of “popularizing, globalizing and enhancing the quality of traditional Korean arts.”
Established in 1995 as an annex of The National Theater of Korea, we opened our doors of with the aspiration of restoring the spirit of
“Won-gak-sa,” Korea’s first modern theater and currently specialize in staging Korean “new drama” and “pansori (a type of traditional
narrative vocal music).” As of this year, “MISO,” our stage performance of the traditional arts, is enjoying a successful long run of 13 years
since its debut in 1997, the year that Chongdong Theater became established as an independent foundation, and has been programmed as
a standing performance at our theater since 2000.
“MISO” is a “Korean Musical” composed of traditional Korean dance, instrumental music, “phungmulnori” (a traditional folk musical act
featuring a percussion quartet) and “pansori” (a type of traditional narrative vocal music). Beginning in April 2009, the show has shed its
former linear arrangement and has been renewed into a more optimal performance with improvements in the stage environment.
Chongdong Theater has hitherto delighted 500,000 domestic and foreign attendees with the gift of our joyful MISO (“smile”). Now with a new
presentation of MISO, we seek to renew our challenge to become Korea’s representative performance venue for the traditional arts.
While providing you the moving experience of a attending a renowned cultural performance where tradition meets modernity and offering you the stylistic elegance and entertainment of our traditional arts, we also pledge to be an open shelter for culture wherein you may enjoy the relaxation and sentimental pleasure of natural surroundings in the midst of the bustling city.
Over the past ten or so years, Chongdong Theater, equipped with only a single small-scale theater seating 340 people, has attained
achievements that have eluded even the other larger performance venues. We provided urban workers a relaxing cultural rest stop through
our free lunchtime concerts, and also lowered the threshold for theater attendance to make our performances more accessible to
teenagers and people from culturally underprivileged classes.
In the future Chongdong Theater will continue to offer various performance programs that encompass both tradition and modernity,
thereby making our venue an endeared site where all who pass by Chongdong-gil road may come to share in the fragrant presence of our
vibrant cultural scene.
